One of the great mysteries in Christ is that every miracle, from healing to making huge sums of money, happens because of faith. There are may wonderful lovable teachers that expound on their personal secrets of how to release this power, and it is definitely true that without faith nothing is going to happen. However, I think the real revelation is that 99% of what the eloquent articulate writers and speakers teach is probably not going to do you much good. Let us look at what Paul said about the subject.
“You will remember, friends,” he said, “that when I first came to you to let you in on God’s master stroke, I didn’t try to impress you with polished speeches and the latest philosophy. I deliberately kept it plain and simple: First Jesus and who He is; then Jesus and what He did ~ Jesus crucified. I was unsure how to go about this, and felt totally inadequate ~ I was scared to death, if you want the truth of it – and so nothing I said could have impressed you or anyone else. But the message came through anyway. God’s Spirit and God’s power did it, which made it clear that your life of faith is a response to God’s power, not to some fancy mental or emotional footwork by me or anyone else.”
As you can plainly see, Apostle Paul made it very clear that he was not the source of people’s faith. It was totally their reaction to the result of the power of God. God’s power is released through His living word ~ divine revelation coming straight from the mouth of God to you and I today. Things that God says about events that are going to happen to you today, along with the expression of God’s word, releases faith in you that is so powerful that it can literally move mountains.
I want to explain how this principle works because it is probably one of the most misunderstood power sources in the Bible. With a fresh word from God it is 100% possible for you to have faith, because “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the fresh revealed word of God.” So, if God hasn’t told you to do something, than you just flat-out aren’t going to have enough faith. It took a long time for me to get this concept because I constantly heard people telling me things like: I could conjure up faith in my own mind; that my own dreams were actually faith; or, that all I had to do was read some Scripture verses and I would get faith. But none of those things worked.
Even the world we live in was created by the spoken word of God. When God said, “Let there be light,” every thing that exists today began to be created through faith. In other words all matter that is visible to us was created by something that cannot be seen. Wow! This is a really great equation that the Apostle Paul is trying to show us! Jesus explained in His parables that if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to a mountain, “Be cast into the sea,” and it would be done. What Christ is showing us is that just a little power of God becomes the switch that turns on a whole lot more power. That’s why it is so important that you and I find the switch.
Let me give you an example. This Tuesday we had eight or so young prophets and prophetesses prophesying to our congregation at the 3:00 p.m. service. Suddenly one of the young prophets started skipping across the stage, went over to a woman sitting in the audience, stopped in front of her, and said, “Skip to the loo! You know you have got to use the bathroom, so go ahead!” The lady stood up and immediately started laughing! “Thank you,” she said, “I do have to use the bathroom.” Though that prophecy seems to be small and insignificant, it is the power of God releasing faith as tiny as a grain of mustard seed.
Next, a young prophet turned to me and said, “Pastor, you were wanting to make a decision this morning about something you thought you were to do today. Your decision was right, says the Lord, but you are supposed to do it tomorrow.” I was shocked when I heard the prophecy because I had seen an epic dream that morning that I knew was from the Lord. After I woke up from the dream I felt the Lord tell me to get out of town for three days. But when I asked the Lord to confirm it, He had said, “No.” Now this young prophet, who knew absolutely nothing about the dream or the subsequent conversation I had with my family about the subject of leaving out of town that morning, gave me an accurate prophecy that gave me the right day to obey God.
Then, another young prophet spoke and told me I was supposed to go to a particular city. Now this really seemed out of the blue, because I had no reason to go to the city he mentioned, as I couldn’t think of anyone to meet with there. But I realized I would go anyway ~ powered only by faith. (I am actually dictating this blog into the computer while driving to that city.) I have no clue what is going to happen when I get there ~ maybe nothing, or possibly something great. But I definitely know that this is how real faith works.
The reason this way of seeing faith is not popular among most Christians is because it appears to be completely unpredictable or entirely random. But when you are really in the walk of faith, it is actually the opposite. It becomes very dependable, intelligent, exciting, fun, and mind-blowingly wonderful! Being totally dependant upon the spoken word of God…
