All my life I have wanted to work on things that were of great significance. Like most of you I would like to be able to say at the end of my life that I did something for the Lord that was really important, that I helped change the world and make it a better place to the glory of God. Of course, like many others, I felt the way to do this was to climb the ladder of success so I could become powerful enough to influence others to righteousness. After thousands of attempts at trying to be successful on my own I realized that it was impossible, and that true success was to be achieved by listening to the daily word of God and obeying exactly what He tells me every day. Of course, what I am talking about was a major structural change in the foundations of my personal life and that’s why it has taken me years to try to make this conversion.
Two weeks ago the Lord spoke to me and said, “I am going to speak to you more quietly so make sure you listen.” This word was significant to me at two levels. In my personal life I was still was not hearing God, especially in the area of my personal eating habits and getting down to my proper weight. Secondly, I also know that the Scripture says, “He that is faithful in little will be made ruler over much.” The last two weeks have been very informative to me regarding my spiritual life, especially in the understanding of the whole technology of the Holy Ghost. The metaphor that God has been using to teach me is the example of utilizing my smart phone as an interface and realizing that the Holy Spirit is in my tummy and He is using my physical body as an interface (or temple of God) to communicate to me.
For instance, the smart phone industry has spent literally millions of dollars worth of technological innovations to make your cell phone reliable in its ability to communicate with others. Jesus was referring to this aspect of technology in the spiritual world when He said, “My sheep hear My voice and another’s they will not follow.” I realized this week that to hear God’s “quiet voice,” it was going to be necessary for me to have clear communication with the Holy Spirit speaking out of my tummy ~ with no interference or interruptions occurring. Yesterday, while I was still asleep, the Lord spoke to me and said, “There are two things you need to do on an art project that you are working on, Richard.”
Then slowly as I began to wake up out of my dream state, there were many other things that began to rush into my mind ~ busy things like appointments and necessary projects that I needed to work on. To my amazement, when I began to ask God what I was supposed to work on that day, seven times in a row He said, “No.” I realized that even what I considered to be important projects the Lord did not want me to do even those. Instead, it seemed that He was pointing me to do this small insignificant task regarding artwork, which appeared to me to not even be a priority. I did finish the task, which took about six hours. When I arrived home my wife, Sandy, said that I needed to run to Costco to pick up some food items for the family. This fit perfectly into my changed schedule because the art item that God had told me to work on was completed and I could drop off the ceramic piece to be fired by the art studio on the way to Costco.
I arrived at Costco at dusk as it was just beginning to rain. I picked up our family’s supply from the store and came back to my car in the crowded parking lot to load the stuff into the trunk. I then went to take the shopping cart back to the storage rack in the parking lot. I waited in the rain because there was an old Chinese gentleman holding a fresh pizza box in his hands and he was standing in front of where I wanted to put my cart. I continued to wait quietly for him to move but he was so concerned about something that he kept standing there. I finally asked him, “Sir, can I ask you to move for a moment so I can put my cart away?” He quietly turned to me with a concerned look on his face and said in perfect English, “Oh, I am sorry. Sure you can put your cart right here.”
Then I heard the still small voice of the Holy Spirit speaking from my tummy saying, “Help this man, whatever he needs you to do.” When I asked how I might be of assistance he said, “I can’t remember where I parked my pickup truck.” If he didn’t get out of the rain soon I knew his pizza would be totally ruined. I hurriedly started searching the surrounding parking lanes looking for his truck. Each time I came back to him and described the trucks I saw they were either the wrong color or make. After a few more journeys I came back to him and there was an elderly Chinese woman standing with him. I concluded it was his wife and she also had been looking for their truck. It was now raining so hard that I knew I had to get this elderly couple out of the downpour so I offered to let them sit in my car.
After the couple climbed into my car I turned on the heater and I began making a methodical drive through the large Costco parking lot as they looked for their truck. After driving up and down most of the lanes we suddenly pulled up to his truck and the couple were so happy because they had begun thinking someone had stolen their vehicle. Now they knew they could stop worrying because there it was safe and sound. In a few minutes they were in the safety of their own vehicle and well on their way to where they lived. On my way home the Holy Spirit suddenly came upon me with a flood of joy and tears began to flow down my face as I continued driving home. I realized at that moment that my entire life’s dream was being accomplished, for I was beginning to hear the voice of God and was moving into His perfect will.
